The plot thickens! It seems that the witchetty grub look-a-like found by gardeners at Club La Costa World’s Cornish resort Trenython Manor is puzzling the experts.
The large grub, which definitely looks like the bushtucker trial favourite from “I’m a Celebrity…” is safely back in its tree stump home near Trenython Manor’s main car park. Resort Manager Nick Waddington sent a selection of photographs to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust to see if experts could identify the larva, and it is now the subject of some debate!
Dr Keith Alexander, Cornwall’s Coleoptera (beetle) recorder, reckons it’s the larva of one of the longhorn beetles – Cerambycidae. But even he is unsure and has forwarded the pictures to colleagues, seeking their opinion. Colleagues in the Wildlife Information Service reckon that if Dr Alexander isn’t sure, then it’s pretty much guaranteed to be something unusual!
“We pride ourselves on providing a haven for wildlife, most of which we can identify! It’s interesting to be at the centre of a wildlife mystery,” says Nick Waddington.
