The Salt Mines of Hallein are located in a medieval village just south of Salzburg; only a 60min drive from Club La Costa World’s Alpine Centre and they are well worth taking a look.
At the site of the 7000-year-old mine is a visitor centre, containing a museum and a guided underground tour lasting around 90 minutes that features a ride on an electric train and a boat trip across an underground lake.
Visitors are asked to dress in overalls to protect their clothing and the tour guide is dressed in a traditional miner’s costume of the period. All multimedia displays and commentaries are multilingual and offer an insight into the history of the mines and surrounding areas.

The mines have been in operation for thousands of years and were worked by Celtic tribes which helped the city of Salzburg to prosper into a powerful trading base and also gave the city its name.
Initially mining was carried out manually but it developed into a system where fresh water was pumped into the mines. After a number of weeks absorbing salt from the rocks, the water was pumped out to a processing plant in the town of Hallein.
The salt mines are a unique feature in Austria and have been opened up into a premium visitor attraction that is definitely worth a visit during your stay at Club La Costa World’s Alpine Centre.
