The stand-on scooter is a British invention, and over the years has made its mark at shopping centres and airports, helping security staff and policemen cover vast areas with ease and speed.
Now it saves on shoe leather as visitors to Malaga’s city centre take in the sights all around the heart of the city, with the help of friendly guides who speak excellent English.
The Segway is clever, easy to use and environmentally friendly. It may only have two wheels but everything is perfectly balanced thanks to an ingenious system of electronic gyroscopes which keep the rider upright. Simply step on with both feet, lean forwards to go forward and backwards to reverse. Steering is simple too – move the central handle from one side to the other. Before you set off you are kitted out with a visibility vest and helmet, and put in some practice in a quiet square – after just a few minutes you will be raring to go.
It takes the smallest of body twists to manoeuvre, the machine stops on a sixpence and because so little effort is required fans describe it like floating on a magic carpet.
Tours of up to two hours take place each day taking in the secret corners of the city, plus big attractions like the Cathedral, the Carmen Thyssen Museum, everything to do with Picasso and the Moorish Alcazaba fortress sitting high above the city. You can cruise along the promenade past the port and down to the Malagueta beach, spotting the astonished and envious faces of passers-by as you whiz comfortably along.
There are several different tours, including one to the Malaga Wine Museum, and kids over nine can go too, but you need to make sure that they follow the rules and don’t throw in a few skateboarding moves.
It’s a fascinating way for visitors to Club La Costa’s Costa del Sol resorts to soak in the atmosphere of the lovely city that is Malaga without having to break into a sweat.
