Places of interest and sightseeing trips are a popular part of most holidays. One such place to explore is Sirince which is ideally located for Club La Costa members and guests staying in either of our Turkish resorts, the soon to be opening new Kusadasi Golf & Spa Resort or Apollonium Spa & Beach resort.
This very picturesque old Greek village perched on the mountain of Selcuk is surrounded by vineyards and olive trees and is well known for its local wines.
The village originally went by the name of Cirkince which means “ugly” because the original inhabitants wanted to deter visitors from discovering their hidden gem. As time went on, people did start finding the village and so it was eventually renamed to Sirince or “pretty”.
After the war of independence in the 1920s, Sirince became the perfect blend of Greek and Turkish cultures which remains largely unchanged to this day. Narrow streets and typical Greek houses, largely having all their original features intact hug the side of the mountain with some of the better examples being open to the public.
Traditional cuisine is plentiful, there are many restaurants to discover in the village serving local specialities along with grilled meats, in addition, the famous fruit wines made of apple, berries and more unusual types such as myrtle serve as an accompaniment to all dishes.
Women from the village make wonderful handicrafts that are available for purchase and the small shops are stocked full of the wines and olive oils that are produced locally.
Although the village itself is a haven for photographers, the surrounding areas with fantastic valleys, olive groves, vineyards and peach gardens are well worth taking the time to explore.
