Continuing our overview of excursions available to Club La Costa members and guests staying at the Apollonium Spa & Beach resort, our shuttle allows for a free day to explore the delight that is Didim.
At the heart of the Didim peninsula is this radiant temple, named after the god of light. Apollo came across the shepherd Brancus in Didyma and bestowed him with the power of prophecy.
Branchus later established the first shrine in the name of Apollo at the spot of the sacred spring, which still can be seen today. The Apollo Temple was managed for many years by the family of Branchidae – direct descendents of Brancus.
The meaning of the word “Miletos” is “owner of the road leading to the temple”. The road in question is the Sacred Road, which is lined on both sides with statues and leads from the Panarmos Harbour (present day Mavisehir) to the Temple of Apollo.
Didim appeared on the history scene as one of the temple cities of Miletos. In the course of time, and especially after the 6th century BC, the Apollo Temple became renowned worldwide as an oracle.
Though it was repeatedly destroyed through wars and natural disasters, the magnificent Milesian civilisation and each and every civilisation that followed, rebuilt the temple in accordance with their own beliefs.
However, the Apollo Temple was never completely finished.
