Club La Costa’s Apollonium Spa & Beach resort in Turkey is an ideal base for tourists wishing to explore the surrounding areas. Mythological tales that fired your imagination as a child, come to life in this region of Turkey which is littered with ancient theatres, temples, agoras and baths.
The Etruscans who came to the area circa 3000BC created Aphrodisias. Once home to the goddess Dida it also became the sanctuary of Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty and sensuality in Hellenic times.
It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey, with impressive architectural examples including the majestic city walls, an amphitheatre with seating for 12000 people, the largest elliptical stadium, the 220m long agora (market place) and of course, the temple of Aphrodite. The great beauty and extraordinary preservation of this site combine to bring the civil culture of the Greco-Roman world to life.
Hierapolis is a ‘sacred’ city that was home to the goddess Cybele. There are also many hot water springs that were associated with Pluto, the god of the underworld. As a sacred thermal site, emperors and statesmen once visited the area, however, due to the many earthquakes this was eventually abandoned. Hierapolis and Pamukkale are world heritage sites and among the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey.
The magnificent Roman ruins of Hierapolis are definitely a ‘must see’ for anyone coming to the area and the site offers a spectacular view of the white travertine terraces of Pamukkale (Cotton Castle), considered by many to be the eighth wonder of the world – you can even take a swim in one of the sacred thermal pools.
Club La Costa has an organised excursion to the above locations which can be booked directly with Reception at the Apollonium Spa & Beach resort. Prices include entrance fees, local guide, an open buffet meal and a shopping trip. The trip departs at 7.00am and returns at 8.00pm.
