The Sky Sports Soccer Saturday ‘first team’ was seen out and about in Tenerife last month as they gave their support at a series of fundraising events for the UK based charity – MARIE CURIE CANCER CARE.
Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels was pleased to support the charity by donating accommodation for the soccer pundits, who stayed at the company’s Monterey Royale resort.
Asked about the quality of the accommodation, ex-Portsmouth, Stoke City and Leeds Utd midfielder Chris Kamara said, “The rooms are absolutely outstanding,” while Celtic, Arsenal and Scotland star Charlie Nicholas simply added, “Brilliant, brilliant; really, really good.”
The guys, who enjoyed a great dinner in Club La Costa’s Sunset Restaurant and were equally impressed with the resort’s breakfast standards, were keen to emphasise how fantastic the service and staff had been during their stay.
As a former Liverpool FC and England captain, Phil Thompson was well used to enjoying luxury accommodation and surroundings during his playing days and said, “Two things are very important to me when I’m holidaying – friendliness and cleanliness and I couldn’t believe how many members of staff were busy cleaning this morning – from mopping the floors until they were sparkling to, not just hosing down the sun beds but actually scrubbing them!”
“All the Club La Costa staff have continually looked happy, working with smiles on their faces and especially Emilio from the restaurant who has been a fantastic, welcoming host. Even the small shop on the resort stocks everything you need and it all just puts me at ease so I can relax and enjoy my holiday.”
Phil’s parting shot before leaving the resort? “The views from our apartment in Monterey Royale were breathtaking and I have been thoroughly impressed with the standards from Club La Costa. “
During their time on the island, the Sky team participated in a charity golf tournament and a ‘gentlemen’s evening’ where the stars took turns to entertain an audience of some 225 people with hilarious tales of their football careers and behind the scenes in the Sky TV studio.
Revenue from tickets, a raffle and an auction – not to mention some ‘gentle’ gambling games around the tables – raised just under €20,000, but the celebrities put their hands in their pockets to boost the figure up to £20,000 to round off a remarkable and very successful evening.
