Club La Costa member Baltazar De Sousa recently finished an impressive 36th overall in the 2011 Paris Marathon – clocking a very creditable time of 2h 31m 49s.
He was also the first Portuguese competitor to cross the finish line and was placed 3rd in the ‘veterans’ category for runners aged 40-49.
While his success in the French capital may have been a far cry from his 2010 win in Club La Costa’s very own charity race – The Smile Mile – Baltazar was nevertheless competing in Paris with the help of a generous sponsorship from Club La Costa.
The event on 10th April attracted its usual field of some 40,000 runners and was won by Benjamin Kiptoo of Kenya, who ran a superb time of 2h 06m 31s.
Officially the 5th largest marathon in the world, the Paris event starts in front of the wonderful ‘Arc de Triomphe’ on the Champs Élysées and is routed through the Bastille, Nation, Vincennes and les Tuileries areas of the city – taking in Notre Dame cathedral, the Eiffel Tower and the Bois de Boulogne – before finishing on Avenue Foch.
