Tourists have named gorgeously pretty St Ives the number 1 beach resort in the UK on the TripAdvisor website – and the quaint town’s sensational sands also featured among Europe’s finest.
The stunning beaches of Porthmeor and Porthminster were especially highly rated, contributing to an area rich in tourist delights. Malcolm Bell at VisitCornwall said the placing was “testament to the popularity of St Ives which is truly one of the jewels in Cornwall’s crown”.
With its golden-sand beaches and sheltered coves, swimmers, sun worshippers and water-sports fans are all drawn to St Ives, where they find great surfing, wind surfing and water-skiing. It was placed sixth overall in Europe.
In the UK, St Ives was closely chased by Newquay, and a third Cornish resort: Padstow, came eighth in the ranking. A great result for the county and which put Cornwall “head and shoulders above other destinations”, said Mr Bell. Non-beach attractions particularly admired by visitors included the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, Brooks Smith Gallery and Wills Lane Gallery.
Emma O’Boyle of TripAdvisor said the best destinations had been decided by millions of travellers.
The recognition for St Ives was warmly welcomed by Nick Waddington, resort manager at one of two Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels in Cornwall: Trenython Manor, Tywardreath, and Hustyns in Wadebridge.
“Our resorts are about an hour’s drive from St Ives, and many other attractions are within easy reach. With its breathtaking coastline, unique Eden Project, art galleries, museums, wonderful gardens open to the public and fascinating fishing ports and historic towns, it’s no wonder Cornwall is regarded as the perfect holiday destination.”
