“Golf courses, culture, the sun each day brings
These are a few of our favourite things…”
The Costa del Sol has long been a holiday hotspot for the Brits, with numerous other nationalities pouring off the planes to enjoy the Spanish sunshine, but it seems that the number of Austrian visitors is set to increase by 50% this year.
Following a drive by the Costa del Sol Tourist Board to promote the region in Central and Eastern Europe, meetings were held recently in Vienna between Spanish delegates, and Austrian tour operators and tourism authorities during which it was established that the Costa del Sol fits the holiday criteria sought by many Austrian tourists.
One of the biggest attractions of the Costa del Sol for the Austrian market are the high number, quality and price of the region’s golf courses – considered to be much more competitive than other golfing destinations. Other pulls to the region include language tourism, drawing the large number of Austrians who like – and wish to learn – Spanish, and also the fact that Malaga is considered to be a cultural hotspot, and top destination for a city break. Malaga’s proximity to other cities with a rich historical and cultural heritage, such as Seville, Granada and Ronda, increased its status as a prime destination for Austrians interested in cultural tourism.
Costa del Sol Tourist Board President Salvador Pendón announced that “These are sectors with a huge potential, and the Costa del Sol has the necessary infrastructure to cater to them, thus leading to higher numbers of tourists.”
According to facts from the Costa del Sol Tourist Board, the number of Austrian visitors to the Costa del Sol has gone up by 53.33%. Budge over Brits!
