From its humble roots in Spain, Sangria has grown to become a hugely popular, summer party drink around the world. It was first tasted at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, when the Spanish World area served it up to its unsuspecting visitors. Needless to say, the Fair was a huge success and since then, Sangria’s global popularity has been assured. Here’s the classic recipe.
Ingredients
(For about 3 litres:)
2 bottles red wine – (originally, it was made with a good Rioja to get the authentic Spanish flavour, but the choice is yours. Whatever – be sure to let the wine chill overnight.)
2 oranges sliced
2 lemons sliced
4 tablespoons orange liqueur (Gran Marnier or Cointreau)
4 tablespoons of brandy or rum
2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
1 bottle lemonade (optional, depending on taste)
Cinnamon stick and ground nutmeg
Procedure
Mix the wine, brandy (or rum), orange liqueur, fruit and sugar in a large serving bowl.
Add some ground nutmeg and a cinammon stick for extra flavour if desired.
Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
Just before serving, add lots of ice and some lemonade to dilute to your preferred strength.
Some Hints & Tips
You can add any fruit that you want, but apples and pears will absorb all the rum.
When ready to serve, crush the fruit lightly with a wooden spoon.
Burgundy wine and white rum work well, and spiced rum is even tastier.
If you make 3 litres, try to invite some friends or family around to help out. Otherwise, don’t make any plans.
